The Western Stark Free Clinic once served as a vital resource for low-income, uninsured and underserved residents, offering free medical and dental care with compassion and dignity. When the difficult decision was made to close its doors in 2014, the mission did not end—it evolved. Through the creation of the Western Stark Free Clinic Charitable Fund at Stark Community Foundation, the clinic’s board ensured that its legacy of care would continue by supporting the health needs of Western Stark County in a new and sustainable way. It's purpose remained the same: to serve neighbors in need and strengthen access to care.
That legacy is evident today through the fund’s recent support of Stewart’s Caring Place: Aunt Susie’s Cancer Wellness Center to expand services at its Canton location to reach more individuals and families navigating a cancer diagnosis. With this grant, the center has strengthened access to individual counseling with certified professionals, maintained a pantry with essential food and supplies, facilitated support groups and transitioned from all volunteers to a fully staffed facility. Together, these expanded services help ease the burden of treatment while improving quality of life. In this way, the spirit of the Western Stark Free Clinic lives on—continuing to care for the whole person through collaboration, compassion and community-driven solutions.
