Melvin Tolson was a Carroll County businessman and an avid pilot. His wife, Frances, was a longtime art teacher in the Carrollton School District. In recognition of Melvin’s work and dedication in establishing the airport in Carrollton in the early 1970s, the airport was officially named Tolson Field.

Aviation and the arts were always the Tolsons' passions, and although they both have since passed, their legacy continues through a scholarship fund they established through Carroll County Foundation, an affiliate organization of Stark Community Foundation. Each year, scholarships are awarded to students pursuing careers in aviation, art education or the fine and performing arts. One Carrollton student who benefited from the Tolsons’ generosity is now training to be a pilot for Skywest Airlines, and a recent scholarship recipient is in the Arts Scholars Program at The Ohio State University.
