YMCA of Central Stark County Provides Childcare for Essential Workers

YMCA of Central Stark County Provides Childcare for Essential Workers

Although the YMCA of Central Stark County’s physical locations are closed to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, it has remained dedicated to building community and taking care of essential workers and their families.

When the first case of the virus was confirmed in Stark County, the YMCA took the proactive step of ceasing school age child care programs. Soon after, Ohio Governor DeWine issued the executive order closing all schools and gym facilities in the state. Armed with a passionate staff team and a promise to the community, the YMCA went to work on plans to help meet the needs of Stark County families by delivering digital programs to members and providing what it could to help essential workers.

It was clear that a child care solution for essential workers would be a top priority, but being able to offer this care required additional financial support to comply with the necessary regulations to keep children and staff safe. Through the generous support of Stark Community Foundation’s Immediate Impact Alert Fund and other local philanthropic organizations, the North Canton Child Development Center was able to reopen as a licensed pandemic child care center.

The YMCA partnered with Aultman and Mercy hospitals; multiple police, fire and EMS departments; nursing homes; and other essential workplaces to offer child care. The North Canton Child Development Center provides a clean, safe and nurturing place for essential workers to take their children while they serve our community. Today, nearly 60 children have participated in the pandemic child care programming, giving families some peace of mind during this unprecedented time.

Here is what one grateful pandemic child care parent had to say:

“Today was Desmond’s first day, and the warm welcome he received helped so much to make the drop off go smoothly for him. I was expecting fear and tears, but Desmond was very talkative and open to going inside without a problem. I’m already super impressed, and I hope we can continue to bring him. Thank you for providing this service…I truly appreciate everything you do.”

Watch the message these children have for the community.
