Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Feeds Neighbors in Need

Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Feeds Neighbors in Need

In just one month, the need for food through the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank increased by 125%. Unfortunately, given the unexpected financial challenges caused by COVID-19, the Foodbank expects the heightened demand for food assistance to continue.

Through the generosity of many, including Stark Community Foundation’s Immediate Impact Alert Fund, the Foodbank has been able to support individuals and families struggling to make ends meet by allocating grant dollars across 79 hunger-relief programs within Stark County.

“We’re extremely grateful for Stark Community Foundation, Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton, Hoover Foundation and The Paul & Carol David Foundation’s support of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s hunger-relief efforts through the COVID-19 crisis,” said Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Foodbank.

One hunger-relief program receiving support is Helping Hands, a small food pantry serving the Sandy Valley community in southeastern Stark County.

“Your grant will enable us to meet the increased demand for food assistance,” said Becky Larson, the director of the Helping Hands Network. “We are seeing new faces as the need for food is becoming real in our community due to lost jobs and children at home. Your support will keep our shelves full, which will keep hungry bellies full in our community! Your generosity will impact our neighbors in the most vital way.”

Heather Weaver, the site and programs manager at Catholic Charities Serving Portage and Stark Counties, shares a similar sentiment.

“On behalf of all of us at Catholic Charities, and especially on behalf of those who will directly benefit from the food made possible through your generosity, thank you. We appreciate the ability to help service the high level of need our community is facing in these difficult times. Thank you and God bless.”
