Meet Our Board Chair: E. Lang D'Atri, Esq.

Date posted: May 4, 2016

E. Lang D’Atri, Esq.
Chair, Stark Community Foundation Board of Directors and Distribution Committee

How did you first get involved with Stark Community Foundation?
My involvement started in 1963, following the death of my Great Aunt, Rosa Langenbach, the widow of Edward Langenbach. Edward’s trust was instrumental in the formation of Stark Community Foundation. Following her death, family members and close family advisors including Dale Hall, Corliss Hostetler, Paul Belden and representatives of the Timken family held a series of meetings, which culminated in a plan to follow the organizational footprint of the Cleveland Foundation for the enduring benefit of the people of Canton and its “environs.” I was privileged to be part of our family discussions. Later in my career, I started the Hartville Area Charitable Community Charitable Trust, which assumed the leading role in developing the Hartville Community Center Campus and the collaborative programs between the Lake School District, the Hartville Branch of the Stark County Library, a Medical Center and the Lake YMCA. Under one “campus plan,” all organizations share in the costs and benefits to the community. The plan has become a prototype for others in Ohio and other states. My involvement in the original concept of the Foundation has continued to evolve. It’s amazing to me that the nearly $5 million organization has grown over 53 years into a major Ohio and national charitable organization of more than $220 million in assets.

As Board Chair, what is your vision for the Foundation?
Much like the founders of Stark Community Foundation, my vision is for it to continue to serve the needs of our community. I want to see the Foundation support health, education, hunger and housing initiatives as well as excellent infrastructure in Stark County. I’d also like the community to learn more about and interact with the dedicated people who work at the Foundation, the behind-the-scenes people who work closely with donors and nonprofits to make an impact on the community.

Where’s your favorite spot in Stark County and why?
Home on my farm in Hartville, relaxing at twilight, looking out over the pasture and watching the waterfowl, deer and other creatures browse and settle in for the night. Why? The tranquility of it all and knowing that tomorrow will bring another day. My favorite public place is the McKinley Museum.

What are you most proud of about Stark County?
Our people. The leadership and enthusiasm of those throughout the area who continue to build and improve educational and health services as well as infrastructure for the betterment of our community make me proud to live and work in Stark County. The neighborhood associations that are part of Stark Community Foundation’s Neighborhood Partnership Grant Program are a perfect example! They take so much pride in making their neighborhood a great place to live, learn, work, play and raise families.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about the Foundation?
I wish people knew the Foundation is a vital and vibrant organization led by energized staff members, volunteers and community members who are dedicated to connecting donors to the charitable causes that are important to them and meeting the needs of our community.
