Hurricane Harvey: How you can help

Immediate Impact Alert

Stark Community Foundation created Immediate Impact Alerts to provide you with all the need-to-know information about our community’s greatest needs as well as a way to effectively and immediately respond.

Thanks to the generosity of many supporters in our community, our last alert raised enough funds to clean and repair the Steel Industry murals in the Frank T. Bow Federal Building in downtown Canton and establish an endowment fund at Stark Community Foundation for the continued preservation of the 13 historic murals. Thank you for your overwhelming support!

Today, our alert is focused on helping residents in Texas and Louisiana who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The Need

As Hurricane Harvey continues to cause catastrophic flooding in Texas and parts of Louisiana, tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their damaged homes to seek shelter while some are still stranded in their flooded homes without power. To put this into perspective, the area of Texas that's underwater is comparable to the distance between New York City and Boston.

It is expected that flooding will persist for the next several days, delivering as much as another 30 inches of rain. Millions of people are facing flash flood warnings, and Texas officials are reporting at least nine people have died as a result of the devastating storm. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as Harvey causes more rain, rising rivers and surging flood waters.

Meteorologists predict Harvey could break a US record for the most rainfall from a tropical storm, and it's projected that the damage to Houston's economy will be more than $30 billion.

The Response

No one organization alone has enough volunteers, supplies or resources to meet the needs of this massive disaster. Disaster relief teams from across the country - including American Red Cross and Salvation Army - are working around the clock to provide safe shelter, food and clothing to individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Stark Community Foundation is donating $10,000 to the Harvey relief efforts. Join us in supporting families in Texas and Louisiana communities by making a donation to the Foundation's Immediate Impact Alert Fund. All monies raised through this effort will be equally disbursed to our local American Red Cross and Salvation Army chapters in support of their Hurricane Harvey disaster relief and recovery efforts.
