Historic Milestone For Stark Community Foundation

CANTON, Ohio (March 6, 2014) – Stark Community Foundation celebrated a remarkable year of philanthropic firsts. Thanks to the generosity of nearly 600 hundred individuals, families, businesses and organizations, our total assets have surpassed the $200 million mark! 2013 also marked the second highest year in contributions to the Foundation, with donors providing $11.8 million in new dollars.

From the Foundation’s beginnings in 1963 with matching grants from the Edward A. Langenbach Trust and the Timken Foundation of Canton, the Foundation has become an important contributor to the Stark County community. The initial gifts served as the first of many contributions, both large and small, that have enriched thousands of lives right here in our community.

“We have reached the $200 million milestone because of our donors, who, one by one, have decided to give back to their community. Each donor and each gift is unique. The impact of their giving not only creates a strong community foundation, but more importantly, creates a stronger Stark County community,” said Mark Samolczyk, president of SCF.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of the first community foundation in the United States. The idea of communities pooling charitable assets to achieve greater social impact quickly caught on. To date, there are more than 700 community foundations in the United States; SCF ranks in the top ten percent in asset size.

“These milestones speak to the vision of our donors. Every individual, family, business, or organization has their own mission and we are here to provide strategic advice to them while simultaneously addressing community needs through our grantmaking and initiatives,” said Bridgette Neisel, vice president of advancement. “It’s all about our donors’ wishes and the legacy they want to create.”

The process of giving is simple. The Foundation receives a gift, and in turn, invests the money for growth and income. Income generated is then used to award grants to organizations. Since 1963, grants in excess of $117 million have been returned to the community. Last year alone, SCF distributed $6.5 million in charitable grants.

“Our exceptional growth would not be possible without a strong investment policy, dedicated volunteers assisting us with our work, and the continuous support of our donors,” said Samolczyk. “The Foundation has grown from simple grantmaker to a community leader that partners with donors to seek long-term solutions to diverse community challenges.”

Stark Community Foundation is the community’s trusted partner in giving to nearly 600 individuals, families, businesses, and communities that have created funds to impact the lives of others through the most effective philanthropy possible. Serving the community for more than 50 years, Stark Community Foundation ranks in the top ten percent of community foundations in the United States and has granted $117 million to nonprofit organizations.
