Scholarship Fund Benefits Local Students

Stark County-Stark Community Foundation and former members of the Board of the MassillonYWCA are turning a heartbreaking decision into a favorable outcome by partnering to offer scholarships for female residents of Western Stark County.

In December 2010, the YWCA was forced to discontinue all its programs and close its doors due in part to financial reasons as well as cuts in government funding for child care. The following year, contents of the building were auctioned off and the building was sold in 2012. In the meantime, an advisory committee, comprised of former members of the Board of Directors, made the decision to create a scholarship fund.

“We are honored to continue the legacy of the YWCA of Massillon. A core piece of the YWCA’s mission is to empower women. I can’t think of a more fitting way to do that than through education,” said Vice President of Advancement, Bridgette Neisel.

On August 12th, a dedication was held to honor the YWCA of Massillon’s contributions to the community and to unveil a plaque in Duncan Plaza commemorating their history and accomplishments. The 90 year-old organization has been a valuable resource for programs and services for the Massillon community. Although the building, staff and programs no longer exist, the YWCA legacy will continue through the establishment of their scholarship fund.

“This scholarship will continue to serve the community in the name of the YWCA for many years. It will be a tribute to all women who served both as employees and volunteers over the past 90 years,” said former Board President, Linda McClintock.

Positive steps continue as a scholarship selection committee has been established and an application will soon be available on the Foundation’s website for the 2014-2015 academic year. To view all scholarship opportunities, visit and click on Apply For FundingFor Students.
