Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina & Stark Counties has launched a new male mentor recruitment campaign "Be the 90" — an ambitious initiative to recruit 90 male mentors by July 4, 2026.
The goal? Eliminating the current waitlist of boys in our community who are eagerly waiting a positive male role model.
Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Through professionally supported matches, the organization helps children build confidence, achieve educational success and reach their full potential.
Research shows that having a positive role model can significantly impact a young person’s confidence, academic success and long-term outcomes. Across the nonprofit’s three-county service area, dozens of boys are currently waiting for a mentor — someone to spend time with, offer guidance and simply show up consistently.
“Too many young boys in our community are waiting for someone to believe in them,” Executive Director Kyle Putinski said. “With Be the 90, we’re calling on men in our community to step up in a meaningful, life-changing way. Just a few hours a month can alter the trajectory of a child’s life and often the mentor’s life, as well.”
The time commitment to become a Big is intentionally manageable. Volunteers are asked to spend just two to four hours per month with their Little, engaging in everyday activities like playing sports, grabbing a meal or attending community events. Flexibility allows mentors to build genuine, lasting relationships without overwhelming their schedules.
Current mentors say the experience is both impactful and rewarding.
“Becoming a Big for Big Brothers Big Sisters has had a huge impact on my life,” said Bryce Rebuck, a current Big Brother. “Being able to connect with a Little and see their growth is one of the most rewarding experiences you can be a part of. This program has not only given me the opportunity to mentor a Little in my community, but it has also helped me grow as a person. The support from other Bigs and the BBBS staff is always felt. The flexibility of this program makes it easy for anyone to get involved. If you’re considering becoming a Big, take that leap, you’ll quickly see how rewarding it is.”
Maxwell Warner has been involved with the organization as both a Little Brother and Big Brother. The impact on his life has been so profound, he extended his support and currently serves as a board member.
“Having a mentor as a Little meant having someone who showed up for me during a time when friendship and support made all the difference,” said Warner. “It gave me a sense of connection, encouragement and confidence that stayed with me long after the program ended. Becoming a Big myself made me realize just how powerful that role can be.
"It was incredibly meaningful to give back to a young person in the same way my mentors once showed up for me. Mentorship has been a full-circle part of my life, and I truly believe one caring adult can make a lasting difference in a child’s life.”
Though all volunteers are appreciated, the Be the 90 campaign is a direct response to the urgent need for male mentors — as boys make up most of the youth waiting to be matched. By reaching this goal, Big Brothers Big Sisters ensures that every child who wants a mentor will soon have access to one.
“Imagine the impact if 90 men in our community said ‘Yes,’” added Putinski. “Together, we can ensure that no child is left waiting for someone to show up.”
