In partnership with The Repository, every Monday, Stark Community Foundation highlights positive happenings in our community. Here’s to Good News Mondays!

For the 11th year, students from University of Mount Union have celebrated Halloween by collecting donations from the community for Alliance Community Pantry. This year, 2,670 pounds of food were collected during the Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods event.

The annual event is organized by Mount Union’s Regula Center for Public Service, which provides opportunities for students to prepare for careers in public service, get involved in the community and learn about the importance of civic engagement.

Mount Union’s Greek organizations and clubs are assigned neighborhoods around campus where members leave door hangers a few days before Halloween letting neighbors know they'll be collecting food donations on Trick-or-Treat night. In addition to the items collected on Halloween, students also collected 297 pounds of food during a recent Greek Week initiative.

The winner of this year's collection competition was fraternity Alpha Phi Omega with 801 pounds of food collected, followed by fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon with 549 pounds. In total, the 11-year tradition has brought in more than 42,000 pounds of food for the pantry.

“Year after year our students and the community make this event a success,” said Abby Schroeder, Director of Mount Union’s Regula Center for Public Service. “We are proud of the work of our students and commend the community for their ongoing support.”

Alliance Community Pantry has become a major source of food for those with hunger needs in the surrounding area. Clients are served from the pantry’s own stand-alone building conveniently located in downtown Alliance. Events like Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods enable the Pantry to provide its clients with a wide selection of food choices alongside items from the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.
