The Canton Museum of Art (CMA) was recently awarded a new Inspire! grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to support CMA’s innovative Museum To Go program, which provides free, virtual exhibit tours and multidisciplinary, hands-on artmaking lessons to fourth- through sixth-grade students in public school classrooms throughout Stark County.
The dynamic program, based on Ohio Learning Standards in language arts, math, history, social studies, science and visual art, integrates high-quality arts education with cross-curricular learning and utilizes museum exhibitions to fuel student creativity, innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving.
Lessons, taught by trained art educators, include a virtual 360-degree tour of a CMA’s permanent collection and class discussions connecting key artworks with cross-curricular content through hands-on artmaking experiences. Resource packets are provided for each lesson, including supplemental activities, links to multimedia resources and lesson plans to further student learning.
Thanks to support from funders like the IMLS, the Ohio Arts Council, The Hoover Foundation, the Paparella Family Foundation and ArtsinStark, the Canton Art Museum is able to offer this impactful program for free to schools in Stark County.
“We are honored to have been awarded this competitive grant, which recognizes the museum’s excellence in our work with Stark County students,” said CMA Director and CEO Max Barton II. “Along with the support of other funders, like the Ohio Arts Council, this IMLS grant will support the implementation of the Museum To Go program in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years.”
The Canton Museum of Art was among 59 organizations of the 218 applicants to receive the national funding from IMLS. In total, projects received more $2.5 million in support through the grant.
