Local Foundations Invest Nearly $500,000 to Fight Hunger in Stark County

Stark Community Foundation, The Paul & Carol David Foundation and Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton recently announced their second round of food security funding, bringing their total investment in this initiative to nearly $500,000 to date.

Stark Community Foundation recognized the growing issue of hunger in our community and embarked on a long-term effort in 2013 to address the food security challenges facing Stark County and its residents. Since then, a comprehensive research study has been conducted, a framework for addressing food security has been created and an initial round of planning and implementation grants was awarded in 2015. Most recently, a second round of funding was awarded to Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Walsh University and Pegasus Farm to find long-term solutions to hunger in our community.

“Not only is this a collaborative effort by the foundations that are providing funding, but also all grant proposals required collaboration with other organizations in Stark County,” said Mark J. Samolczyk, president of Stark Community Foundation. “We recognize that when organizations come together for the greater good of our community transformational results can emerge.”

Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank received a $15,000 planning grant to explore the development of a food security hub in Stark County and a $100,000 implementation grant to continue its collaboration with Community Harvest. Walsh University received an $8,520 planning grant to create a blueprint for establishing itself as a Food Security Resource Center for the region, and Pegasus Farm was awarded a $93,760 implementation grant to expand its wellness garden operation.

The next opportunity to apply for a future of food security grant will be summer 2017. To learn more about this initiative, visit www.starkcf.org.
