35 STARK COUNTY NONPROFITS RECEIVE

GRANT MONEY TOTALING $54,972

Funds benefit youth programs during the summer months

  

Stark County, OH-Guided by participants of the current Leadership Stark County class; Stark Community Foundation's SummerTime Kids provides charitable grants of $500 to $2,000 to imaginative and unique summer programs with an emphasis on character and community service.

The volunteer committee consisted of the current Leadership Stark County class; they reviewed applications and awarded grant dollars.  "It is very heartening to learn there are so many non-profit organizations working to impact our youth in a positive way.  The most difficult challenge throughout the process was deciding which projects would be funded and which would not," said Leadership Stark County Class Participant Melissa Kandel-Nichols.

The following nonprofit organizations received grant funds for use during summer 2010:

 

Alliance Area Domestic Violence Shelter-"Going Green" program, to provide inspirational, entertaining, and educational activities to encourage life-long community activism and eco-friendly behavior. 

Arc of Stark County, Inc.-For a summer day camp for children with developmental disabilities.  The funds will be used for scholarships so children will be able to attend camp. 

Baldwin-Wallace College-A summer music program scholarship for four Stark County students to attend the String and Band Camps. 

Canton City Schools/McGregor Elementary-The 2010 Literacy on the Lawn Program will target the entire McGregor community with literacy picnics and the bookmobile.

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health/Sports League-Children will be able to join a sports team and work on skills such as teamwork, respect, responsibility, self-esteem, communication skills, trustworthiness and social skills.

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health/Footprints-The Footprints program will engage children and adolescents in a collaborative with Beech Creek Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve, to teach children to plan, create, and maintain a vegetable garden that will benefit the community.

Community Services of Stark County-An educational program for homeless children at the center. 

Dedicated Adults Directing and Defending Youth, Inc. (D.A.D.D.Y.)-A collaborative between S.W.A.N. (Southwest Neighborhood Association) and D.A.D.D.Y.  will facilitate a nine week enrichment project called "The Impact of the Ohio Underground Railroad Experience for All Ethnicities". 

Domestic Violence Project/Girl Scout Troop #738-A "Family Fun Night" at the Domestic Violence Shelter for the families and children who are sheltered there.

Early Childhood Education Alliance, Inc.-Field trips for preschool children to interact with nature.

Fairless Local Schools-Asset building activities, character education and leadership, social skill development, self-esteem, appropriate communication, appropriate anger management, decision-making and peer pressure resistance for at-risk students.

Faith Family Church /Royal Family Kids Camp-A five day camp for abused and neglected children that are in foster care. 

Friends of Stark Parks/The Stark County Park District-Stark Parks Nature Camp will teach children about nature and wildlife through programs, hikes and discovery. 

Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio-For camp is to build girls of Courage, Confidence, and Character to make their Community a better place. 

Grassroots Ministries/Camp Buckeye-A full scholarship to camp for ten children residing in Canton City Schools, who otherwise would not be able to attend camp will be offered.

Hammer & Nails, Inc.-Funds will be used to support and lead the work of Stark County youth in home improvement projects for homeowners who are struggling to maintain their deteriorating homes. 

Hartville Migrant Council, Inc.-To offer educational opportunities, recreational activities, nutritious meals and loving friendship for the children of migrant workers. 

Holly Hills Little League/Canton Challenger Baseball-For eight teams to travel to Maumee, Ohio to play in the Challenger State Tournament.

Interfaith Child Development Center-The program will collaborate with the YMCA of Alliance to implement a reading program for Alliance's Latchkey students.

J.R. Coleman Child Care & Family Center /PRESCHOOL-Children will go on several outings and will have a "going back to school" party at the end of the summer.

J.R. Coleman Child Care & Family Center /SCHOOL AGE-The School Age Summer of Excellence Program will include field trips, transportation and asset building activities. 

L.I.F.E. (Living in Full Expectation, Inc.)-For a one week summer camp focusing on "It's All About Me", to teach self esteem to young girls. 

Lighthouse Ministries, Inc.-To cover the extra per student costs of fieldtrips and to cover scholarship costs.  Funds will also be used to buy supplies for a Peacebuilder Mural Project, the annual block party and to pay staff.

Mercy Medical Center, Inc.-ImagiKnitters is an innovative children's program designed to teach 12 underprivileged children to knit.

North Canton Playhouse/Very Special Arts (VSA) Arts of Ohio-Summer Camp Jukebox is for disabled children to learn song, dance and drama.  Camp will end with a performance for family and friends on the last Friday of camp, and on Saturday at the North Canton Main Street Festival.

Pathway, Caring for Children-For an eight week therapeutic session for the foster children and their siblings.

St. Paul's United Methodist Church-A six week program to work on improving academic skills, the arts, drug awareness and prevention, alternative to gang membership, Bible study, music and gym. 

Stark County Community Action Agency-SCCAA will offer the Spectrum Summer Camp Program for 150 low-income, pre K through 8th graders in the Canton and Massillon area. 

YMCA of Central Stark County/Louisville Area YMCA-A 12 week summer day camp program that is designed for children entering grades 1 - 8. 

YMCA of Central Stark County/Paul & Carol David-For Summer Fun Club and Club Mid Day, and to join in Lake's 4th Annual Character Olympics. 

YWCA Canton/Early Childhood Learning Center-The children that attend School Age Summer Camp will invite service members to an Appreciation Dinner to give them thanks.  The children will help by creating the invitations, helping to serve dinner and hand out flowers.

YWCA Canton/Canton Preschool- To clean-up trash along the bike trail at the Ohio Erie Canal Trail in Massillon, followed by a bike ride.  Children will also make homemade dog biscuits and take them to the Humane Society.

YMCA of Central Stark County/Meyers Lake-The funds will be used to strengthen efforts in teaching character values of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship during the Summer Day Camp Program. 

YMCA of Western Stark County/Massillon-Funds will be used for "YMCA Kids Give Back to the Community" program, including: baking supplies, flower pots, confectionary oven, luncheon supplies, etc.  They kids will bake cookies, plant flowers, plant a garden and give the produce to Massillon City Hall.

YMCA of Western Stark County/Towpath Trail-This year's focus will be to teach Character Counts in the community.  We will teach character building skills through activities, programs and rewards.  There will be weekly character themes: Caring, Respect, Aptitude, Courage and end with Spirit Time.
